There are many book-to-screen adaptations that hold a very special place in my heart, but there is one Irish novel that was made for the big screen, and that's Brooklyn. Brooklyn was recently added to the streaming platform Netflix again, much to readers' delight.
The Colm Tóibín novel has long been one of my favourites, but there's something special about the movie. Saoirse Ronan was born to play Eilis Lacey, and her performance makes the film one of the most rewatchable movies, despite how much it makes me cry.
If you've never read the book or watched the charming film, then you're in for a serious treat. Brooklyn tells the story of Eilis Lacey, who moves from Ireland to New York in the 1950s.
It is Ireland in the early 1950s, and for Eilis Lacey, as for so many young Irish girls, opportunities are scarce. So when her sister arranges for her to emigrate to New York, Eilis knows she must go, leaving behind her family and her home for the first time. Arriving in a crowded lodging house in Brooklyn, Eilis can only be reminded of what she has sacrificed.
She is far from home - and homesick. And just as she takes tentative steps towards friendship, and perhaps something more, Eilis receives news which sends her back to Ireland. There she will be confronted by a terrible dilemma - a devastating choice between duty and one great love.
Brooklyn also stars Domhnall Gleeson, Emory Cohen, Julie Walters, and Jim Broadbent.
Brooklyn is on Netflix now.
