Get fit, look fit: Look great when lifting those weights

In the gym, looking trim

Conor Heneghan

Because everyone needs something to divert attention away from their gym face.

The gym should really be a place for hard work and hard work only, but so popular has it become these days that it’s almost seen as an equivalent to the pub as a social outlet.

Gym-users are now increasingly keen to look good in front of their peers and it’s OK to take pride in your appearance… as long as you’re not the guy who stands in front of the mirror flexing his guns while barely doing a single exercise for the best part of two hours.

If the gym gear in your wardrobe needs an upgrade, some of the bits listed below might help.

Canterbury Cotton Graphic Sleeveless Tee – €26

Some prefer the discreet approach when pumping the guns in the gym and opt to keep their arms covered.

Let’s not beat about the bush here, however, others like to have them on display so they (and everyone else in the gym) can see the effect of every single rep.

There’s nothing spectacular about this Canterbury sleeveless tee, but it does leave those arms mightily exposed, so you’d better be comfortable with exposing Dan and Ger in public.

Nike Pro Hypercool compression woodland 3/4 – €37

weightgear5

You’d need to be a brave man to wear something as flash as these in the gym, but they’ll certainly make people sit up and take notice.

From a purely performance point of view, they’re really comfortable, very breathable and will prevent any kind of embarrassing fashion faux-pas during your deep squat.

Men’s Under Armour Alter Ego Flash T-Shirt – €46.25

weightgear3

Apart from sleveless garments, t-shirts with motivational messsages or large logos are amongst the most popular fashion items in a gym nowadays.

Under Armour have a range of cool options which you can check out here, but we’re particularly fond of this one emblazoned with the logo of The Flash, sure to help you run at approximately 670 mph the next time you’re on the treadmill.

Nike Dri-Fit Knit Long Sleeve – €44.50

weightgear2

Not all gyms are heated, whether that’s artificially or by the accumulated body heat of fellow gym-goers.

So if you need something to provide a little bit of extra heat when the temperatures are low, this Nike long-sleeved top is more than fit for purpose and looks cool too.

adidas Powerlift 2 Shoes – €78

weightgear4

If you’re serious about your weightlifting, then investing in a pair of shoes fit for purpose could well be worth your while.

This model from adidas is enduringly popular, it’s solid as a rock and it won’t break the bank either.
