Outrage in English school as pupil sent to school with Smartie sandwich

Schools in Lincolnshire in England have begun to introduce a free meals in schools scheme after outrage over a pupil sent to school with a Smartie sandwich.

Delicious and all as it sounds (and looks – see picture above), a couple of slices of white bread packed full with Smarties isn’t exactly the healthiest lunchtime option and teachers at the Lincolnshire school felt moved to act after spotting the sandwich amongst a pupil’s lunch.

As a result, the NHS launched an investigation into the eating habits of schoolchildren and found that sweets, crisps, chocolate and fizzy drinks were commonplace; thereby adding to the obesity problem that already exists in the county.

Schools have since been trialling the free meals scheme, which sees children provided with healthy eating options instead of the sugar-filled snacks they had been eating previously.

A spokesperson for the NHS told The Sunday Express: “When we heard about the Smarties sandwich, it was horrifying.

“We went into the schools to have a look and found the children eating what I would class as picnics, the sort of lunch you might have once in a while as a treat, not everyday.

“Switching to a proper dining experience worried some of the schools, but they have found it is a good experience showing the pupils how to eat properly.”

The parent in question obviously went to the fridge for some ham and when there was none there, decided to fill the sandwich with Smarties instead.

They should have known better though. After all, Smarties don’t always have the answer.
