Physical education set to be introduced as a Leaving Cert subject

Sporty people will be over the moon with this news.

The Department of Education has detailed its plans to introduce physical education as a Leaving Cert subject. The Department is inviting applications from secondary schools who hope to be among the first 50 or so schools to pilot a first phase of the subject.

According to RTÉ, the course will be broken down into three components — students must complete a physical activity project, a performance assessment and a written examination.

The subject will be available at higher level and ordinary level.

The teaching of PE as an exam subject will begin in September of 2018, with the first actual exam coming in 2020.

According to the Irish Examiner, the actual written exam will account for half of the student’s overall grade, with 20% coming for the physical activity project, and 30% for the performance assessment. The project will involve the student taking on the role of either performer, coach, or choreographer.
