Second case of coronavirus confirmed at Trinity College

As of Wednesday, all Trinity College lectures for the remainder of the current semester will be delivered online.

Trinity College Dublin have confirmed a second case of Covid-19 at the college. The college learned of the confirmed case on Wednesday evening (11 March), a male student from the health sciences faculty. The student was based outside of the campus and is now receiving the appropriate medical care in hospital. The first case of Covid-19 at Trinity College was confirmed last week. The student did not live in university accommodation and the Department of Health has begun the process of tracing anyone who was in contact with him. Trinity College say that they will take all actions necessary to contain the spread of the virus, including the temporary withdrawal of students on placement in partner hospitals until a fuller evaluation of risk for each placement location has been conducted with Trinity’s clinical colleagues. Students will be informed of this decision by their heads of discipline and all students will actively be kept informed of measures being taken by the college by email. The policy of delivering all lectures online – outside of tutorials, seminars and laboratory practicals, which will all continue to be given in the usual fashion while using social distancing protocols – will continue, while all other possible measures will be kept under review. The college said that their goal should be to decrease the number of instances that lead to students, staff and visitors coming together in large groups in close proximity with each other. Students were also warned about false information circulating about Covid-19 on social media, including manipulated images. On Wednesday evening, a further nine cases of Covid-19 were confirmed in the Republic of Ireland, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 43. Ireland recorded its first death from coronavirus on Wednesday, an elderly woman with underlying conditions who had been treated for the virus at Naas Hospital.
