What happens to your bed sheets when you don’t wash them for a week is manky

Paul Moore

*Washes sheets immediately*

Nobody likes to change their sheets and duvet – apart from those few seconds when you get to pull the sheet over your head and pretend that you’re a ghost, we know that you do it – but as we mentioned before, it should be part of your weekly ritual.

After receiving this definitive answer in how often you should wash your sheets, we asked the JOE readers how often they changed their sheets and a staggering 95% of them told us that they only change them *at least* once a month.

Gagging

Bearing this in mind, a laundry expert for about.com was recently speaking with ATTN and they revealed some pretty eye-opening and stomach-churning details.

They said: “during sleep, we continue to perspire, and body oils and soil are released. It is possible to find saliva, urine, genital fluids, and fecal matter in the fibres. If the linens are not washed regularly, and the occupant has scratches or wounds, they can become infected. Athlete’s foot and other fungi can be transferred from fabrics. Infrequent cleaning of sheets and pillowcases allows the fluids to seep into the pillows and mattresses, and those are MUCH more difficult to clean than tossing sheets in the washer”.

Grim.
