You’ve probably been making this crucial error every time you make a cup of tea

Alan Loughnane

Doing it wrong…

There’s a lot to be said for a nice cup of tea. At the end of the day, at the start or in the middle, it doesn’t really matter. Tea is always a good choice.

We make piercing judgments of character, lifestyle and overall contributions to society by how a person makes a cup of tea. There’s a clear line between right and wrong in the tea-making process.

Do you prefer tea with your milk? Black tea? Do you put the milk in first (you monster)?

One thing every cup of tea has in common is that you have to boil water to make it. But a lot of people have been making a crucial error during this very simple step.

Speaking to the Telegraph, William Gorman, chairman of the Tea and Infusions Association in Britain, said that many people make the mistake of boiling the water in the kettle more than once.

Many do this because they reuse the water left in the kettle, or they simply forgot about the water the first time they boiled it, but according to Gorman, it’s spoiling your tea.

“Usually when people’s tea goes cold they reboil the kettle and make another cup,” Gorman said. “But doing this, you are guaranteed to give yourself a dull cup of tea. You need freshly drawn water for a good cup because reboiling it takes all the oxygen and nitrogen out of it.”

He added: “A better solution is to put it in the microwave for 15 to 20 seconds. When you microwave tea all you’re doing is from a scientific point of view is just moving the molecules around and getting it back up to a decent temperature. It is not impacting the flavour at all.”

Spread the news around, nobody wants to be known as the person who makes a dull cup of tea.
