It’s not often Roy Keane defends referees but that's what he was doing over Nani’s red card tonight against Real Madrid and had Gareth Southgate squirming in his seat.
By Declan Whooley
The ITV pundit was not buying into common consensus that referee Cuneyt Cakir had helped the Spanish giants by the issuing the United midfielder with a red card, something the former Old Trafford player felt was fully justified.
“The referee has made the right call. It’s dangerous play. A red card and correct decision,” he said emphatically.
Host Adrian Chiles, along with Gareth Southgate and Lee Dixon felt it was a poor call, something Keane was having none of.
Keane, who had been sent off early in his United career for stamping on Gareth Southgate while he was at Crystal Palace was again putting the boot in, subjecting his fellow pundit to that steely stare before questioning Southgate’s opinion again.
“You said he’s not aware Gareth, does he not think there would be other players on the pitch?”
You have to hand it to Keane, he is nothing if not honest, and also added that it was ironic that it was Arbeloa that went down dramatically given Nani’s penchant for the theatrics.
“He’s not the bravest player on the planet,” he added matter-of-factly. Check it out here for yourself.
