Joey Barton getting involved in a Twitter spat is nothing new, but his row with Didi Hamann this evening was incredibly controversial even by his high standards.
As virtually all of the juicier tweets have since been deleted from both Hamann and Barton’s accounts, it is unclear as to how exactly the row between the pair started, but it seems to have been in relation to Hamann having a go at Barton over his criticism of his former clubs following updates about the future of Marseille player Loic Remy, with both QPR and Newcastle chasing his signature.
Whatever started it, it wasn’t long before it escalated quickly, with both players attacking each other in a very personal and revealing way in front of hundreds of thousands of followers on the social networking site.
As we said, most of the offending tweets have since been deleted, but a glance through the results after putting their names in the search bar reveals a flavour of what was said, which you can see for yourself below.
In case it escapes your attention, Joey Barton did at one point accuse Hamann of playing online poker and smoking spliffs the night before games.

Mad stuff.
Update:
The last tweets of both Barton and Hamann on the matter this evening (it finally seems to be over).
