A Manchester United fan has been charged for shouting racist abuse at Stoke City players when the sides met at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.
Considering everything that has gone on in English football over the last few months, another racism scandal is the last thing the Premier League needed and this latest arrest will come as distressing news to those leading the fight against racism in football.
According to The Guardian, 57-year old Howard Hobson has been accused of a racially aggravated public order offence and using threatening words or behaviour to cause harassment, alarm or distress.
He was arrested at Old Trafford on Tuesday evening after a fan made complaints to stewards that Hobson had been shouting abusive comments at Stoke City players. The police were informed and Hobson was subsequently arrested and is due to appear at Trafford Magistrates Court this Wednesday.
News of the incident comes only weeks after Liverpool supporters were accused of racially abusing Oldham player Tom Adeyemi at Anfield, which prompted an emotional on-field response from the young midfielder. More on that one here.
