To say that Everton supporters are not best pleased with the new design would be a slight understatement and they are doing their utmost to scupper the new design.
By Declan Whooley
On Sunday we reported that the early reaction to the new design was not good, and if the club thought that it was just a few unhappy grumblings, then they will have to think again as more than 17,500 supporters have signed an online petition at what they describe as an “embarrassing” design.
While we don’t think too much of the new design ourselves – the term ‘childlike’ immediately springs to mind – what has got the Toffees faithful most upset is the removal of the club’s Latin motto and a pair of wreaths underneath the badge.
The petition states the “awful” crest would lead to losses "due to no-one wanting to buy any merchandise with that printed on it".
The removal of the motto ‘Nil Satis, Nisi Optimum’, which means ‘nothing but the best is good enough’ is ironic considering how poor the fans deem the design, though merchandise featuring the new crest went on sale on Sunday.
The Toffees have really put themselves in a sticky situation and whether the club are willing/able to take on-board the groundswell of opinion remains to be seen.
Here is the online petition.
