WATCH: Opening 20 minutes of new Avengers game reveals major plot point

It becomes clear immediately that this story isn’t linked to the movies at all.

It isn’t that long since we played that incredible Spider-Man game on the PS4 that didn’t attempt to copy and paste the plot of any of the movies, and instead stood on its own two feet, becoming much more memorable and enjoyable for that very reason.

While the rest of the Avengers have managed to destroy the cinematic box office, we all knew it would only be a matter of time until they got their own game as well, and along came Square Enix (the folk behind Deus Ex, Tomb Raider, and the Final Fantasy franchises) with Marvel’s Avengers.

The game will be playable offline by solo players, as well as online for up to four players during certain parts of the main missions, and the plot revolves around the Avengers celebrating the opening of their new San Francisco headquarters before the arrival of mysterious villain results in the destruction of the entire city.

Five years later, the threat returns again, but superheroes have been made illegal since then, and the Avengers are forced to reunite and save the world, but this time saving a world that doesn’t want them around anymore. So you should expect to see some pretty major villainous characters appearing through the main missions as you fight your way to the big baddie.

The new footage from the game takes place within those opening 20 minutes of the game, during the San Francisco celebrations, and shows the arrival of the mysterious villain, and actually reveals plenty of other shocking surprises, including the very early death of a very important character.

Just when we thought the wounds from Infinity War and Endgame had begun to heal over, here we go all over again…

Marvel’s Avengers will be released on PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Google Stadia on 15 May 2020.
