There is a new BioShock game on the way

Just a sequel to two of the best games ever made. No pressure.

August 2007: BioShock is released on PS3 and Xbox 360, and it went on to win several Game Of The Year awards that year, and has also been listed on Time Magazine’s 100 Greatest Games Of All Time.

March 2013: BioShock Infinite is released on the PS3 and Xbox 360, and it too went on to win several Game Of The Year awards that year, with several outlets naming it one of the best games released in that generation of consoles.

(We’re just kind of mentally skipping over the fine-but-obviously-rushed 2010 sequel, Bioshock 2.)

However, as anyone who has played Infinite can tell you, that game ended the series’ story pretty perfectly, so the need for a sequel wasn’t exactly too strong.

That being said, if anyone can deliver an intelligent, unique way to expand the BioShock universe, it is the folks at 2K Games, who today (Monday 9 December) confirmed that there is a new entry in the series on the way:

In their official statement, one that also announced the creation of Cloud Chamber, their new in-house development company, 2K Games said:

“BioShock is one of the most beloved, critically praised and highest-rated franchises of the last console generation. We can’t wait to see where its powerful narrative and iconic, first-person shooter gameplay head in the future with our new studio team at Cloud Chamber leading the charge.”

The same announcement claimed that they’ll be working on the new BioShock “for the next several years”, so don’t expect to see it this side of the PS5 / Project Scarlett.

With the Games Awards set to take place on Thursday 12 December, don’t be too surprised to see some very early footage from the new game at some point (along with, potentially, our first look at the new Batman game).
