2020 is going to be a landmark year for gamers.

We know Christmas 2019 hasn’t arrived yet, but you should probably start putting together your letters for Santy for Xmas 2020, because it is going to be an expensive one.

We’ve already known that the PlayStation 5 is going to be arriving around the same time, and that Microsoft was bringing out the next generation of the Xbox, currently known as Project Scarlett.

However, it turns out that Project Scarlett may not be the name of the new console, but the title for the whole new generation of Microsoft consoles, as The Verge reports that there will actually be two new Xbox systems arriving in late 2020.

One of the systems, codenamed “Anaconda”, will be the most expensive and more powerful of the two, and will have a disc drive, while the other system, codenamed “Lockharte”, will be cheaper, but like the Xbox One All-Digital Edition, will only be able to play downloadable games as it will not have a disc drive.

While he refused to comment specifically on this dual system launch, Xbox chief Phil Spencer did admit to learning some lessons from the launch of the previous generation of consoles:

“I would say a learning from the Xbox One generation is we will not be out of position on power or price. If you remember the beginning of this generation we were a hundred dollars more expensive and yes, we were less powerful. And we started Project Scarlett with this leadership team in place with a goal of having market success.”

Expect more details of both versions of the new Microsoft consoles, as well as the PS5, sooner rather than later. Perahps even in the next few days, at the 2019 Games Awards.
