Netflix has just added one of 2023’s best action thrillers

JOE

the killer

By Nina McLaughlin

Based on a graphic novel series, the movie holds an 87% Rotten Tomatoes score.

With the nights drawing in, it’s safe to say that we are all looking for something else to keep us occupied in the evenings.

And Netflix’s latest release is about to fill that hole and then some as it’s an action movie from none other than director David Fincher (Fight Club, Seven, Mindhunter).

An assassin-focused thriller titled The Killer, the film is based on the French graphic novel series of the same name and has been hotly anticipated since the adaptation was first announced back in 2007.

However, it wasn’t until 2021 when the wheels began to roll and Fincher began working with Netflix on the flick.

Fincher’s frequent collaborator Andrew Kevin Walker, who he worked with on Seven, penned the screenplay for the movie version.

It first screened at the prestigious Venice International Film Festival earlier this year, before getting a limited theatrical release last month.

Starring Irish actor Michael Fassbender, The Killer follows a mysterious assassin who is targeted by his employers after botching an assignment.

In response, he goes on an international manhunt – seeking revenge against everyone involved.

Co-starring Tilda Swinton, Charles Parnell, Arliss Howard and Sophie Charlotte, JOE’s entertainment editor Rory Cashin praised the movie, labelling it “basically an evil Jason Bourne movie”.

Scoring an 87% Rotten Tomatoes score, here is a sample of some of the other glowing reviews for The Killer:

Above the Line: “Prime David Fincher, a cleverly-crafted revenge thriller that keeps you on your toes.”

The Daily Beast: “It’s arguably the greatest expression yet of Fincher’s style and worldview—caustic, unrelenting, and wickedly funny.”

Empire: “A riveting revenge riot, with gobsmacking levels of film craft, and a performance from Michael Fassbender to make your blood run cold. It’s not quite top-tier Fincher, but it comes damn close.”

The Guardian: “This is a thriller of pure surface and style and managed with terrific flair and Fassbender’s careworn, inscrutable face is just right for it.”

The Messenger: “There’s nothing I hate more than going to a car rental dealership, and even that looks cool in this movie.”

The Killer is available to stream on Netflix right now.
