As the mornings get darker, the temptation to hit the snooze button becomes harder to ignore…

If the sound of your morning alarm triggers fight-or-flight mode or if your night owl tendencies leave you feeling lethargic, you’re not alone. While getting enough quality sleep is a huge part of waking up feeling energized there is more that you can do to help say goodbye to morning grogginess.

Step 1: Make those daylight hours count

Getting outside early in the morning, filling your lungs with fresh air and soaking up that increasingly scarce sunshine should be part of your daily to-do list. The vitamin D boosts your immune system and can increase serotonin levels, which will help you to beat those winter blues. While you’re outside, why not also try to fit in a workout that suits your fitness levels to release those all important endorphins. Even adding in just 30 minutes of exercises per day can help to put more pep in your step.

Step 2: Prepare for the morning the night before

If you’re someone who doesn’t seem to get going until after your first coffee kicks in, make things as easy as possible for yourself in the morning by getting the prep done the night before. Before you go to bed, get your work gear together, make the kids’ lunches and pack that gym bag (if you’re feeling optimistic). Finally, if setting your blaring alarm makes you dread waking up every morning, why not try a silent alarm to ease you into the day.

Step 3: Do NOT hit that snooze button

As tempting as it can be to hit snooze in the morning, giving your body the permission to fall back into another sleep cycle, you’re ensuring that you wake up feeling needlessly drowsy. You are far better to set a realistic time and just get up. If you’re relying on your phone alarm to wake you up, it’s important that you don’t get straight into scrolling, texting or replying to emails – giving you mind a few minutes to settle into the day.

Step 4: Perfect your morning routine

Waking up every day at the same time helps to reset your internal clock, sleep consistency and is key to avoiding morning grogginess. Yes, that means you’ll be catching those early birds on your days off, but it’s worth it in the long run.

Once you’re up, hydration is the next step. Splash a little cold water on your face and drink a tall glass to help jolt you into a state of alertness.

Top the morning off with a warm shower and a couple of deep breaths outside and you’re set for the day!
