PICS: One of Ireland’s most uniquely brilliant festivals is about to kick off

Rory Cashin

There’s nothing else quite like it.

Now in its 66th year, the Leitrim town of Drumshanbo is the only town in Ireland to continue to hold the An Tóstal Festival every year.

Running this year from Sunday 1 July to Saturday 7 July, it involves parades, concerts, family activites and workshops in art, fishing and wannabe DJs, and this year there’ll be the new addition of Ireland’s first floating boardwalk.

However, one of the major highlights of the festival is the Stylish Silage competition, which essentially involves making artworks out of rounded up stacks of hay.

The winning bale will picked by the voting public, with the winner announced on Saturday 7 July, and there’s already a huge amount of very impressive pieces available for viewing on the An Tóstal Facebook page, which will be updating regularly as more and more entries as posted.

Check out some of our favourites so far below, and check out the full details of the festival right here.
