Whether you’ve just come back from Australia or fancy celebrating Australia Day with your mates who are over there, here’s a quick guide to Aussie beers for you

By this stage we all know of someone in our circle of friends who’s headed off to Australia for the better weather, a chance of work, or the fact that their cricket team is currently hammering England and they want a slice of the glory. Whatever the case, there’s never been a better time to celebrate Australia Day whether your friends or family are here, there, just come back or about to head off, and the best place to head to is The Woolshed Baa and Grill on Parnell Street.

There’s nothing quite as Australian as beer, of course, except maybe Alf Stewart playing the didgeridoo at the Surf Club, you flamin’ mongrels, but if you head along to the Woolshed, you’ll find a huge selection of beers from Down Under both on tap and bottled. However, you’ll need to know a few different beers so that you can show that you’re as Australian as Toadie from Neighbours riding a kangaroo down Ramsey Street, and manage to look like a seasoned veteran when it comes to Aussie beers.

You can pick yourself up a Boags, which is a little Tasmanian devil of a drink, or go native and get yourself a Coopers pale ale. If you want to look like a real pro, then don’t forget to roll the bottle first to move that tasty residue around, just make sure that it’s not already open. If you prefer a slightly darker beer with a bit more character, grab a bottle of Coopers sparkling, which has a nice fruity hint, and plenty of residue too.

If you’re new to the Aussie beer scene however, there’s Carlton Draught (although that comes in a bottle) Twooheys New and Crown Lager, which are all good options if you want to ease yourself into the world of exotic beers from the land Down Under.

Of course, don’t forget to bring your stubby holder to keep them cool, as that’s a pretty key part of being Australian, along with taking about Aussie rules and the NRL. And don’t forget to say mate. If beer is not your thing, then don’t worry, as you can also get some Bundaberg rum to have with a mixer, and still get that Aussie feeling. You have to call it Bundy though, if you want to make it seem like you know what you’re on about.

There’s also a fantastic competition running with our mates at the Woolshed if you fancy the VIP treatment on Australia Day for you and seven of your friends, but that’s not all. They’re not finished there though, as they’ve got a €100 bar tab on Saturday Jan 25th for the Aussie Day celebrations, two tickets to their Super Bowl event on Feb 2nd with a €50 bar tab AND four Woolshed stand seats for the Fifa World Cup final on July 13th with a €50 bar tab, so you have a few huge nights out sorted for you and the lads. You can head over and check out all the details on that competition over here.

And so, in the words of Stingray Timmons from Neighbours, “don’t be a spiggin’ hufter” this Saturday and get yourself down to the Aussie-est (it’s a word, we looked it up) Down Under-iest place on the planet* for the craic.
