Thinking of spending this weekend with the feet up on the couch? Think again. Powered by Lucozade Energy, here are five excellent suggestions for ways to spend the Bank Holiday weekend.

With Easter Monday, the May Bank Holiday and the June Bank Holiday weekend all falling within six weeks of each other this year, we’ve been spoiled for choice when it comes to free Mondays for the last while. We’re not going to get one again until August, however, so you might as well make the most of this weekend while you have the chance.

Thankfully, there are any amount of events and festivals taking place right throughout the country and, whisper it, but there are even reports that it’s going to be dry and the sun might even rear its smiley head for a while. If you’re up for hitting the road and seeing what’s on offer, powered by Lucozade Energy, here are a few suggestions as to what you might get up to from Friday to Monday this weekend.

Forbidden Fruit Festival, Saturday 31 May – Sunday 1 June, Royal Hospital Kilmainham, Dublin

The popular festival returns to Kilmainham on Saturday and Sunday and there are plenty of diverse acts spread over three different stages to satisfy most if not all musical tastes. And when you need a break from the music, comedians like Colm O’Regan, Jarlath Regan and Andrew Stanley will also be on hand to entertain the masses.

Headliners The Flaming Lips, Bell X1 and 2manydjs will inevitably prove very popular and there are still tickets available for anyone who fancies making a last-minute dash to the Dublin venue on Saturday or Sunday. For more information, click here.

Ocean to City – Cork’s Maritime Festival, Wednesday 28 May – Sunday 1 June, Crosshaven and Cork City, Cork

Never mind Oxford v Cambridge, the one rowing race you’ll want to see this year is the one taking place as part of the annual Cork Maritime Festival this weekend. The title of the race, ‘Ocean to City’ pretty much gives it away, but you can expect to see all sorts of boats from all over the world competing for the prestigious title in a race that forms the centrepiece of a festival that attracts thousands of visitors to the Rebel County each and every year.

There’s also be music, on-street entertainment and events to suit the whole family if you want to keep yourself and the kids entertained over the weekend.

The Sky Cat Laughs comedy Festival, Thursday 29 May – Monday 2 June, Kilkenny

Our own Eric Lalor can barely contain himself in the office this week ahead of his appearance at the Cat Laughs, which returns to Kilkenny for a 20th year this weekend.

Eric will be supporting Kevin Bridges and Neil Delamere on Friday and Sunday night respectively, while stellar domestic names like Dara O’Brian, Tommy Tiernan and Des Bishop and international heavyweights such as Bridges, Harland Williams (the cop who drinks the urine in Dumb and Dumber… see below) Rich Hall and George Wendt (Norm from Cheers) will also be appearing as part of what really is an All-Star cast.

Culture and Chips Food Carnival, Thursday 29 May – Monday 2 June, Limerick

Looking for an activity that’s a bit saltier than your average excursion this weekend? Then you really should make your way down to Limerick for the inaugural Culture and Chips Festival, especially if food is your bag, if you want to fry some of the tastiest nosh you’ll taste all weekend and ketchup on all the latest trends in the fast food industry. What’s the aro-matter, you don’t like all the chip puns? We’re not even sorry. For more info, click here.

Bloom Festival, Thursday 29 May – Monday 2 June, Phoenix Park, Dublin

Over 110,000 people attended the food and family festival in the Phoenix Park last year and if the weather holds up (and we hope to God it does) then there could be even more visitors to the Bloom Festival in the capital this weekend.

Amongst the activities on offer will be cookery and craft demonstrations, free gardening advice from the experts, live entertainment and gardening workshops and the kids can come for free. For more information, click here.
