‘I gave my son an Irish name but I can’t pronounce it’

This mum gave her newborn an Irish name

Many parents in America will opt for Irish names for their baby boys and girls, but one has run into an issue with her child's moniker.

One woman recently met a mum who gave her son an Irish name inspired by a mythological figure.

She shared on Reddit, "I’m in the US at least 6 weeks a year for work. I met someone recently who told me she has a great affinity for Irish people, and her husband was of Irish heritage.

"She told me they recently had a baby and they gave him the same name as the great mythological Irish warrior. This was already shocking in itself," the person said.

She thought they called their baby Fionn, but they actually called him Cú Chulainn.

"I probably should have just said nothing, smiled, and nodded. But I didn’t. Who the f*** is Choochalin?" the user wrote.

She later realised the woman called her son Cú Chulainn.

"Instead, I tried to correct her pronunciation. (Coo Cullen is a simplified way). She argued, asking what did I know - Irish people don’t even speak Irish, it’s not a real language."

She said if she was going to give her son a name inspired by Ireland then she should've chosen one she could pronounce.

She said they can pronounce his name differently because they're Irish American.

"All I can say is if dear Choochalin decides to embrace his “Irish heritage” and visit Ireland, he’s going to have a hard time with a name like that."
