Great Scott! Nike are planning on releasing the runners from Back to the Future II this year

Shut up and take our money!

The people behind Back to the Future II got a lot of things wrong when predicting what life might be like in 2015 – flying cars, anyone? – but a pair of futuristic-looking runners with self-tying laces wasn’t exactly beyond the realms of comprehension.

While some would say the runners worn by Marty in the second instalment of the Back to the Future trilogy look as out of place now as they would have in his day in 1985, there will also be many glad to know that Nike are planning on releasing a version of the runners this year.

According to Nice Kicks, chief of innovation at Nike, Tinker Hatfield, told a trade show in Long Beach in California that a release was planned for the Nike Air MAG, complete with power laces, in 2015, telling the audience that there are “11 and two-thirds months left in 2015”.

Speculation about the Nike MAG shoe has been doing the rounds since 2011, when a Nike promotional video was released and 1,500 pairs were auctioned off, with proceeds going to the Michael J. Fox Foundation, which helps funds research for the fight against Parkinson’s Disease.

We’re not sure exactly what’s causing the delay before the release of the famous shoe in question, although apparently it’s something to do with a flux capacitor and generating the 1.21 gigawatts required to finish the job.
