Our TV movie pick for tonight (Tuesday, 10 February) is Queer, the 2024 drama that earned former 007 Daniel Craig some of the best reviews of his career.
An adaptation of Beat Generation writer William S. Burroughs' novella of the same name, the film sees Craig play William Lee, an American expat in 1950s Mexico City.
He spends his days almost entirely alone, except for a few contacts with other members of the small American community, and passes the time by bar hopping and having casual sex with younger men.
One day, William has an encounter with Eugene Allerton (Drew Starkey, Outer Banks), a mysterious expat former soldier, new to the city.
William quickly becomes infatuated with the aloof Eugene, with the pair then travelling to South America to seek out a plant said to offer telepathic abilities.
Queer was directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by Justin Kuritzkes, with the pair re-teaming together after their previous hit, Challengers.
More leisurely paced and enigmatically surreal than Challengers, the drama nevertheless retains a strange emotional power.
Between Guadagnino's typically sensuous imagery and Craig's sad and soulful performance, Queer becomes a beautiful but haunting portrait of someone longing for love and connection who, for whatever reason, can't seem to find these things.
The soundtrack is also incredible, featuring Nirvana and Sinéad O'Connor, while Jason Schwartzman (Mountainhead) and Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread) are an absolute hoot in two big supporting turns, helping to liven proceedings.
Queer is airing on TV tonight on BBC Two at 11pm. It is also available to rent on Apple, Rakuten TV and the Sky Store.
