Here’s how most Irish people will be spending St. Patrick’s Day this year (and the pub is not the first choice)

How will you spend your St. Patrick’s Day?

Ah, St. Patrick’s Day. Or St. Patty’s Day if you’re one of our trans-Atlantic cousins.

It’s a great excuse to stuff a four-leaved pot plant in your jacket pocket, dig out every item of green clothing from your wardrobe and wallow in a healthy amount of national pride for the day.

It’s one of those defining days in Irish life, when small rural towns are taken over by processions of tractors and “floats” that look uncannily like the back of a lorry. Anyone who lives in the capital will be used to a much grander affair, with all the bells and whistles and marching bands that a national celebration deserves.

Plenty of people use the day off work to head for a drink or five but it turns out that not everyone is determined to lift a glass to our national saint. Surprisingly, the majority of Irish people won’t actually spend it in the pub, according to a new survey by BIC Lighters.

In fact, going to the St. Patrick’s Day parade was the most popular option for Irish people on 17 March. A third of those polled said it was their top thing to do on the day. It just pipped visiting the pub with friends (28%).

There’s something about the parade on St. Patrick’s Day that gets you going. Just ask this guy, who went full Irish even though he was in the St. Patrick’s Day in Tokyo.

The survey also threw up some other interesting gems of information. Almost half of the people surveyed truly believe that St. Patrick banished the snakes from Ireland (!) and more than half of respondents have met someone who believes that Leprechauns are real.

One in three named “the people” as the best thing about Ireland, so at least common sense prevailed in some instances!

BIC Lighters are getting into the St. Patrick’s Day spirit this year with a series of Irish-themed lighters to celebrate this occasion of national pride. This is the second year that they have released themed lighters for the big day.

Carry your BIC pocket lighter with pride this Paddy’s Day and pick up an Irish themed BIC Lighter at newsagents and supermarkets nationwide, including Dunnes Stores, Supervalu and Topaz.
