Jurassic Park turns 22 this week: JOE ranks the best scenes

Hold on to your butts

Paul Moore

Hold on to your butts.

Jurassic World is set to leave its T-Rex sized print on Irish cinemas very soon which means that we’ve been locked away in the Jurassic Park visitor centre looking at what went wrong/amazing 22 years ago this week.

Yep, it’s 22 this week. Timmy and Lex must be 102 by now.

Lexy

The Chris Pratt led film is everything that you would want in a summer blockbuster; we firmly believe that he should be in everything, but it got us thinking about Spielberg’s original and some of those incredible sequences that came to define the magic of the cinema for many Irish people.

It’s almost impossible to be cynical, grumpy and all Dennis Nedry about a film that literally made jaws drop to the floor upon its release.

11) The opening sequence

We’re certain that Costa Rica is a lovely place but having seen this sequence we never want to go there. The classic horror rule of ‘suggest but don’t show’ is used to stunning effect.

10) The worst toilet break ever

Lawyers have no souls but it’s still wrong to attack a man when he’s sitting on the toilet. This T-Rex has no manners.

9) Samuel L. Jackson’s severed arm

This is a kids film, right? This moment scared the bejesus out of us in the cinema.

8) The Gallimimus stampede

This is a flocking great scene. Are we the only ones that found Timmy and Lexy incredibly annoying though?

7) Denis Nedry gets his comeuppance

Ah ah ah, you didn’t say the magic word! Don’t worry though, we’re still going to show you one of the best uses of sound in any film.

6) T-Rex chase

Always do what Jeff Goldblum says.

5) Life finds a way

They’re so cute when they’re young. Then they grow up and tear you limb from limb.

4) Clever girl

Often copied, never bettered. Gods honest truth, my friend tried to chat-up a girl by saying that he he was one of the raptors from this scene.

3) Some h2-wooah!

Te fact that Spielberg improvised this scene is testament to his genius as a filmmaker. The inspiratyon for the ripples was from the director listening to Earth, Wind and Fire in his trailer and noticing the bass vibrations.

Funky.

2) The Brontosaurus reveal

There’s certain moments that film lovers will never forget. The Shawshank Redemption escape, Luke destroying the Death Star and every sequence in Showgirls instantly springs to mind.

This trumps them all. We were all Sam Neill in this moment.

1) Raptors in the kitchen

This sequence defines what makes Jurassic Park such an incredible film. Suspense, tension, drama, great effects and further cinematic proof of a master at work.

Jurassic Park changed the landscape of cinema, this is our favourite moment and nothing could top it.

We can’t let this article pass without mentioning the reason why Jeff Goldblum is just so incredibly cool.
