Jack and Emily top the pile yet again.

For the 12th time in 13 years, Jack was the most popular name for baby boys in Ireland in 2019, while Emily was the most popular name for baby girls once more.

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) revealed the stats behind the names of newborn babies in Ireland in 2019 on Friday and there has been very little change when it comes to the most popular names for both sexes.

In fact, the five most popular names for baby boys born in Ireland in 2019 were exactly the same as they were in 2018, while Fiadh and Hannah replaced Emma and Amelia when it came to the most popular names for baby girls born here last year (see both top fives below).

Illustrating how naming trends have changed in the last 50 years, James is the only name in the top five boys’ names in 2019 that also featured in the top five names in 1969, while none of the top five girls’ names in 2019 even featured in the top 100 names 50 years ago.

Amongst the biggest movers and shakers for boys last year were the names Frankie, Theodore and Freddie, while Ada and Ivy rocketed up the list of popular baby girl names in Ireland to 70th and 84th respectively.

More information on baby names in Ireland, including a county-by-county breakdown, is available on the CSO website here.
