Baby names

You’re bound to know a few names on this list.

The CSO has released statistics on the most popular baby names in Ireland during 2018 and yet again, Jack and Emily top the respective lists for boys and girls.

In terms of the most popular names for boys, James, Noah, Conor, and Daniel complete the top five.

As for girls’ names, it was Grace, Emma, Sophie and Amelia that proved the most popular.

What’s unique about the data for 2018 is that, for the first time ever, the CSO has distinguished names registered in 2018 which contain the síneadh fada and other diacritics.

New entrants such as Frankie, Freddie and Theodore made the top 100 names for boys in 2018. Theodore and Frankie were also the names rising most in popularity, increasing 63 and 31 places respectively.

There were four new entrants to the top 100 for girls: Ada, Bella, Bonnie and Ivy.

For those with an interest in history, back in 1968, 50 years previous, the most popular names for boys were John, Patrick, Michael, James and David.

Interestingly, not one of the top five names for girls appeared in the top 100 names a half century earlier. Mary, Catherine, Margaret, Ann and Anne were the most popular names for baby girls in 1968.
