Pic: Maynooth students’ Christmas tree made entirely of beer bottles will take some topping

A lot of thinking went into the formation of this tree by a gang of Maynooth students. Or should we say, drinking.

Since we featured the makeshift Christmas tree put together by a few girls in Limerick’s Mary I college earlier this week, we have been inundated with similar efforts from students around the country who weren’t put off by being unable to afford an actual tree but still wanted some semblance of one in order to celebrate the festive season like everyone else.

Ironically, the materials used by this gang of students in Maynooth to put together their tree would have cost a lot more than a tree itself, but they were merely making use of items that were gathered in the house already, probably because of an acute laziness on their part to refuse to visit the recycling bin since the start of term.

There was nothing lazy about their use of more than a few dozen glass bottles of beer, some sturdy round bits of cardboard and one bottle of vodka in the construction of their own very unique Christmas tree and they were good enough to send us pictures of the various different stages involved in the building process.

The end result, as you’ll see below, is quite spectacular, particularly with the Christmas lights wrapped around and the main light turned off.

Who said college students spent all their time drinking, partying and doing anything to avoid having to actually go to college itself? This, eh, sure shows them.

Great effort lads.

Hat-tip to Shane McQuillan for sending this one our way
