Poor Ryan Tubridy, it seems that even though he’s given up talking about himself on his radio programme, listeners just aren’t interested. Yes, Ray D’Arcy has once again destroyed Tubs when it comes to ratings.
The Irish Daily Mirror reports that while 4,000 listeners switched off Tubridy on 2fm, an extra 15,000 tuned in to listen to Ray D’Arcy on Today FM. And while Ryan Tubridy only rakes in 172,000 listeners for his morning show, Ray D’Arcy is sitting pretty with an audience of 249,000.
Maybe if Ryan Tubridy starts a fight with the Catholic Church then he’ll start becoming more popular with radio listeners too? Just a thought…
Anyway, according to the JNLR figures, Tubridy has lost a massive 124,000 people from his audience since he took over the radio slot from the late Gerry Ryan in 2010.
Dipping figures have been a constant worry for Ryan, and last year he admitted that if his figures continued to slump, he would have to seriously rethink his position and future career in radio.
We imagine then, that Ryan won’t be too pleased then to learn that basically every radio presenter in RTE except for himself fared quite well in the recent ratings - Marian Finucane, Miriam O’Callaghan and George Lee all saw massive surges in their listenership.
And what’s the most popular radio programme? Well, you could have probably guessed this by yourself, but yes, Morning Ireland is still the most listened to radio programme in the country with 449,000 people tuning in.
Anyway, Today FM was delighted with the news and said that the independent radio station was “trouncing 2fm.”
Peter McPartlin, Today FM’s chief executive, was pleased to note that Ray D’Arcy’s three-hour show had a massive 77,000 more listeners that Tubridy’s two-hour show.
So what’s next for Tubridy? Well, we imagine he needs to implement some serious changes in his show if he wants to have a chance of clawing back some listeners…
