To the person who built an igloo in Dublin, called it a studio apartment and tried to rent it for €1,000, we salute you

Michael Lanigan

blizzard

Clearly nobody is frightened of the Beast from the East.

If there’s anything the last six months has taught us, it’s that despite any status red weather warning, the threat of a possible hurricane or the onset of a blizzard, Irish people love extreme weather.

Maybe it’s the lack of rain or the fact that we get to fight over Pat the Baker. Whatever the case, we’ve fallen head over heels in love with Storm Emma.

Some people will sled on the back of a tractor, others will play the saxophone in their underwear, there are no half measures taken here. So in the hours before a nation considered taking the advice of an Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, here are some of the best ways they reacted.

Some things embody the spirit of Ireland; James Joyce, Croke Park, Michael D. Higgins, Liveline, the list goes on. It’s now time to add to the list a man selling Brennans Bread on an ironing board, while wearing a pair of boxers and a t-shirt with the caption “Up Cavan” scrawled on the front.

It’s just too perfect.

Stand back and look on in awe.

Of course, we need to commemorate THAT guy who fell on the ice during an RTÉ News broadcast.

Constructing an igloo is cute. Making a fridge for the beer is downright brilliant. If the power goes, we all know whose house we’re heading to.

Hey, extreme weather brings out an honest side in people. It’s just going to be an awkward 24 hours as nobody is allowed to leave the house.

There’s shameless marketing during the whole storm, but they’re on to something. At least until Saturday, garnishing your gin with bread will be about as elite as those bottles of vodka filled with golden flakes.

While we’re talking about shortages, it was only a matter of time before somebody decided to inject a heavy dose of dark political humour into building an igloo in the snow.

Meanwhile, Green Party leader Eamonn Ryan has found a way of cutting down on using plastic by using baking trays instead.

So that’s Environment 1, Health and Safety 0.

Speaking of influential political figures, what says Lucinda Creighton on all this?

Blaming Aer Lingus for bad weather. Who hasn’t done it?

Yes, once again a storm has brought out the very best in people, but when we look back on all this, it’s going to be hard to deny that the greatest thing about a blizzard in March is the fact that we have another reason to celebrate Christmas, while a few people have an excuse for never taking the decoration inside.

Merry Christmas everybody!
