Swarm of flying ants so large that it can be seen from space arrives in Ireland

Carl Kinsella

Well that’s just great.

Satellite images from the United Kingdom’s Met Office have revealed that Ireland can expect plenty of flying ants over the coming days.

The swarm, which was moving from west to east on Friday, was originally mistaken for rain on the Met Office’s radar. But now the meteorological service has confirmed that it’s actually winged ants. Because it’s not like we had enough to be dealing with already.

In a tweet, the Met Office wrote: “During the summer ants can take to the skies in a mass emergence usually on warm, humid and windless days.” We’re also pretty sure that Satan has something to do with it.

There is a misconception that flying ants show up just one day a year, but we should be so lucky. Flying ants tend to show up in the kind of weather conditions that we’re currently experiencing, so we could be looking at several flying ant days over the coming weeks. Enjoy.
