Are you constantly on edge whenever it’s Friday the 13th? Or maybe you’ve an irrational fear of stepping on a crack in case it breaks your mother’s back? Well, here’s a look at how those superstitions started off in the first place.

Halloween and superstitions go hand in hand, but while most of us remember from our school days that Halloween started out as a pagan/Celtic harvest festival, most people haven’t a clue where all the spooky superstitions come from.

Thankfully, John from the YouTube channel Mental Floss is here to help explain why throwing salt over your left shoulder is supposed to keep the devil at bay.

The video is a tad long at just under 10 minutes, but it’s well worth the watch…

So there you have it. Hopefully you won’t have to worry the next time you accidentally break a mirror while walking under a ladder in a room filled with open umbrellas…
