WATCH: Robin Williams’ 1998 Oscar speech is the perfect way to remember him today

Eoghan Doherty

Remember Robin…

It’s three years to the day since the world lost a great man, a great comedian, a great genie, a great cross-dressing nanny, a great Vietnam DJ, a great Pan and a great teacher…

It’s three years to the day since the world lost Robin Williams.

Robin Williams Dead Poets Society

How do we even begin to honour the memory of a man who brought such happy times, iconic characters and special moments into all of our lives?

There are so many magical memories to choose from, but after laughing and crying our way through superb stand-up routines, boundlessly energetic chat show appearances and many fantastic film roles, we’ve chosen one particular moment which we feel absolutely represents the warmth and modesty of Robin Williams.

This is his acceptance speech at the 1998 Oscars for his flawless performance as Sean Maguire in Good Will Hunting.

Just listen to the roar he gets when his name is called.

Just look at how happy Billy Crystal, his close personal friend and host of the Oscars, is for him when he takes to the stage to collect his award for Best Supporting Actor.

And just listen to what the man himself has to say in his speech.

It’s humble, it’s funny, it’s emotional.

It’s perfect.

Thanks, Robin.
