WATCH: Street artist El Viz tell us what graffiti means to him

Street artist El Viz is a great example of someone who took a chance to follow his dreams.

Having studied art in college, the Dubliner ended up moving away from his creative roots when he got a job in a bank. However, the urge to pursue an artistic direction proved too strong and he ended up taking a chance on his first love.

Although he enjoys people’s reactions to his art, he sees it as something that is primarily for him. He loves the way that street art can surprise in a way that traditional art often can’t.

“I love the fact that I can paint in a laneway somewhere,” he explains. “Because when you walk into an art gallery, you’re kind of expecting to see the art. But when you turn a corner and walk down a laneway and some big pop-art spray paint piece hits you in the face, you’re like ‘Oh, I wasn’t expecting that.'”

Despite having five older siblings, three of whom had PhDs, he never felt any pressure from his parents to pursue a more traditional career path. He was never made to follow others and he found his own way in life as a result.

“It’s not sitting back and letting your life pass you by,” he says. “It’s going out and discovering the world and exploring and seeking out new challenges.”
