WATCH: There’s something very satisfying about seeing this midge trap in Donegal emptied out

This is so satisfying, but disgusting to watch.

Alan Loughnane

Look at all the feckin’ midges!

There are few things more annoying than sitting out on a sunny evening at home, only for your nice relaxing time to be spoiled by the presence of about 18 billion midges.

But, the workers in Glenveagh Castle Gardens have a way of keeping those numbers of midges down by a significant portion.

It’s understood that the gardens are a known hotspot for the wee little blighters, so action had to be taken, hence the introduction of five midge catchers around the grounds.

Gardener Mark McFadden shared a video of ‘The finest Glenveagh midges’ as he emptied one of these machines.

Speaking to JOE, Mark explained that the machine has gas cylinders which create carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide that humans breath out is what attracts midges in the first place. Then the machine has a vacuum that sucks the midges into a bag and traps them.

The midges are then added to the compost that is used around the gardens.

Cheers to Oisín Cannon for sending this our way.
