WATCH: These turkeys circling a dead cat is surely a sign of the impending apocalypse

Rory Cashin

We’re not freaked out. You’re freaked out. EVERYONE STOP FREAKING OUT!

(Deep breath)

Yes, okay, if we were walking down the street and see this we’d probably assume this is the opening scene to some horror movie we’ve accidentally wandered into.

So there’s a group of turkeys… walking in a perfect circle… around a dead cat… in the middle of the road.

That’s fairly unsettling.

But just like everything scary, there may be a scientific explanation.

Talking to The Verge, biologist Alan Krakauer explains they may be doing something called a “predator inspection”, in which they check out the threat levels of a nearby killer.

Why they’d be doing that to a predator that’s clearly already dead? They have an explanation for that, too: turkeys are stupid.

They sometimes get lost in a daze of following the turkey directly in front of them, but if the turkey in front of them is following the turkey in front of them, then… you get a circle of turkeys circling a dead cat.
