The Front Pages
It’s not often we get a good news story making the headlines:
‘The great escape: World rejoices as miracle miners of Chile are freed’ – the Irish Independent.
‘Taoiseach to discuss four-year plan with Opposition: Cowen endorses Green party proposal for leaders’ meeting’ – the Irish Times.
‘Ireland has world’s 10th largest ecological footprint’ – the Irish Examiner.
At 1am this morning the last of the 33 Chilean miners trapped for 69 days in the depths of the earth was rescued and the world breathed a sigh of relief.
There were emotional scenes as Mario Sepulveda was hoisted to the surface and completed the recovery mission of all miners to safety.
Back at home, Taoiseach Brian Cowen has agreed to sit down with Enda Kenny and Eamon Gilmore to discuss the four-year budgetary plan which has to be finalised with the European Commission next month.
Meanwhile, Ireland has the 10th largest ecological footprint in the world, with one of the worst records of excessive human consumption of natural resources, according to a Living Planet report.
