Big Freeze: Transport running basically as normal in Ireland

Despite the Arctic temperatures, most services in Ireland are going ahead as planned, including airport and bus services.

Bus Eireann are attempting to operate as normal, though delays are to be expected in the worst effected areas, while Irish Rail are maintaining a full service.

Met Eireann has said that the worst effected counties are Monaghan, Donegal, Cavan, Roscommon, Kerry and Cork, while the Southwest and parts of the east and north coasts are at risk of further snow storms.

Salt supplies are a concern - national supplies are down to 10,000 tonnes, enough for five days at the current rate of use.

Dublin, Cork, Shannon, Knock and Belfast airports are all operating as normal today, though Heathrow Airport in London is not accepting any new arrivals today.

Many airports in Europe, in Holland, Italy, France and Germany have been affected.
