Gardaí warn motorists not to leave their keys in ignition after vehicle thefts in Limerick

People shouldn’t really have to be warned about this…

Gardaí in Limerick have warned motorists not to leave their vehicle keys in the ignition after a number of thefts were reported in the city in recent days.

According to the Limerick Leader, a car was stolen on Denmark Street in the early hours of last Thursday morning (February 16) and a van was stolen from Union Cross shortly after noon on the same day.

“Leaving the keys in the ignition and a vehicle unattended is an offence under the Road Traffic Act where the owner is liable to prosecution,” Sergeant Justin McCarthy is quoted as saying in the Limerick Leader.

“Apart from this it is a dangerous practice which can lead to serious injury or worse. Gardaí remind the public to secure their vehicles at all times.”

Late last year, Gardaí issued a similar warning to motorists throughout the country after a number of instances of vehicles being stolen while their owners left the engine running in an attempt to clear frost and ice from the windscreen.

Obvious as it might sound, it’s better being safe than sorry.
