Number one is hardly a huge surprise.

The Volkswagen Golf remains an incredibly popular make of car with Irish motorists after it once again topped the list of the most searched for cars on Carzone, the number one online motoring portal for buying and selling used cars in the Republic of Ireland.

The new-shape Mercedes-Benz E Class jumped six places to second place in the list of Ireland’s most searched for cars, with the Audi A6, Audi A4, Ford Focus and BMW 5 Series making up the top six.

As far as the most popular makes of car were concerned, meanwhile, BMW topped the pile, followed by Audi, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, Ford and Toyota.

The most popular makes and models of cars in Ireland formed part of the latest edition of the Carzone Motoring Report, which revealed that one in two people in Ireland change their car every five years and that 47% of Irish motorists tend stick to the same brand.

Rising insurance premiums are a key concern for Irish motorists according to the report, while interest in electric and hybrid cars has increased significantly in the first five months of 2017.

The Nissan Leaf is the most searched for electric car on Carzone while the Toyota Auris takes the top spot in the hybrid stakes.
