There might actually be TOO MANY good movies on the telly today.
Did you have plans tonight?
Well, too bad, you don’t anymore, because there are too many good movies on the telly to enjoy.
SATURDAY 13 JULY
Batteries Not Included – Syfy – 4.40pm
The script debut of Brad Bird (The Simpsons, The Iron Giant, The Incredibles) tells the story of a group of tiny spaceships that help out a bunch of neighbours in a run-down apartment building. It is, in short, an adorable family movie.
Jurassic Park – ITV 2 – 6.25pm
Spielberg kind of remakes Jaws, but with dinosaurs instead of the shark, and a theme park instead of a beach. Okay, so it isn’t THAT much of a remake, but it was his most exciting blockbuster since his killer shark movie.
Flight Of The Navigator – Syfy – 7pm
A young boy goes on an adventure with a quirky spaceship to find out why he woke up one morning to find the world had moved on ten years without him. Another cracker of a family movie that, somehow, hasn’t been remade by Hollywood yet.
The Hangover – RTE Two – 9pm
The first and best of the “what happened last night?” mystery comedies, that launched Bradley Cooper and Zack Galafinakis into the stratosphere of fame. It is also the cinematic equivalent of having The Fear.
Step Brothers – W – 9pm
Will Ferrell in very funny movie: Part One.
The Other Guys – Comedy Central – 9pm
Will Ferrell in very funny movie: Part Two.
The Field – RTE One – 9.20pm
Jim Sheridan’s iconic Irish drama, starring Richard Harris and Sean Bean in a dark drama about men, land, and the willingness to do whatever it takes to hold on to all you have left in life.
Heat – Syfy – 11pm
Why is this action thriller drama on the science fiction channel? We’re not sure, but we’re not arguing, because we don’t need an excuse to enjoy one of the greatest movies of all time.
Three Kings – TCM – 11.10pm
George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, and Ice Cube are three US soldiers at the tail-end of the Iraq War who try to get away with some of Saddam’s treasures, but their heist plan doesn’t go according to plan.
As Above, So Below – FilmFour – 11.20pm
Found-footage horror involving a group of documentarians who are investigating the catacombs beneath Paris and cross paths with an unspeakable evil. Not a great movie, but definitely a fun movie, especially when it goes full-on bonkers towards the end.
LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
