The Good Boy, the excellent Stephen Graham thriller, has been added to Prime Video, just months after its cinema release.
The teenager is enraged and horrified when he awakes to find himself chained in the basement of Chris' isolated suburban family home, where the abductor lives with his wife Kathryn (Oscar-nominee Andrea Riseborough, To Leslie), and their young son.
As the family sets out to "reform" Tommy's unruly behaviour, the hooligan is forced to "either comply with their relentless mind games or seek escape at any cost".
Set in Yorkshire, The Good Boy was made by on-the-rise Polish director Jan Komasa (Corpus Christi, the also brilliant recent Netflix addition Anniversary).
JOE was lucky enough to catch a screening of the Stephen Graham-led movie at this year's Dublin International Film Festival. We were gripped by the way it upends the viewer's expectations of an abduction thriller.
For example, Tommy seems pretty irredeemable by the time he wakes up in Chris' basement, recalling the thrill-seeking sociopath at the centre of Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange, Alex DeLarge.
Chris and Kathryn, meanwhile, appear genuine when they say they want to help Tommy become a better person, even if their methods of trying to accomplish this are brutal.
The cast is fantastic (particularly Boon and Graham), adding personality and fascinating layers to their archetypal characters. Plus, as the story builds to an enigmatic, strangely haunting conclusion, it asks fascinating questions about the nature of control, rehabilitation, and redemption.
