Police rule out foul play in Hayden Panettiere’s death

Police in South Carolina have closed their investigation into Hayden Panettiere's death after officials confirmed that the actress died from the toxic effects of several drugs.

The 36-year-old, known for her roles in Heroes and Nashville, was found in cardiac arrest at an apartment in Greenville on 16 August 2026.

She was unresponsive when officers arrived, and paramedics declared her dead at the scene.

More than two months later, the Greenville Police Department announced on Thursday, 29 October, that the case had been concluded.

Investigators found no evidence pointing to foul play or suspicious circumstances, with the death formally classified as accidental.

The ruling followed a post-mortem examination by a board-certified forensic pathologist.

According to the Greenville County Coroner's Office, the examination found no signs of trauma.

Officials attributed Panettiere's death to the toxic effects of five substances: fentanyl, 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol and quetiapine.

The coroner's office confirmed that the manner of death was accidental.

In its statement, the Greenville Police Department said: “Based on the coroner's office's determination and the findings of the investigation, Hayden Panettiere's death has been ruled accidental. The Greenville Police Department has concluded its investigation.”

The substances identified in the official findings included fentanyl, alprazolam, an anti-anxiety medication, methocarbamol, a muscle relaxant, and quetiapine, an antipsychotic also prescribed for certain mental health conditions.

Panettiere had previously discussed her struggles with addiction and mental health in public.
