These are the 12 best movies on TV today

faceoff

An actual dozen movies to pick from today. Happy Saturday everyone!

There is a lot to choose from, so you’ll understand if some of these descriptions are a little shorter than usual:

SATURDAY 13 OCTOBER

The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring – ITV2 – 7.00pm

The first third of a long walk.

The Purge: Anarchy – E4 – 9.00pm

The first sequel, and the movie that realised the full potential of The Purge movies, by not just setting it in one location (like the first movie) and not getting too caught up in the politics (like the third and fourth movie), finding a happy middle ground.

Moneyball – TCM – 9.00pm

Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill star in this Oscar-winning movie about how a coach beat the baseball system of picking players based on nothing but statistics. Way more interesting than it sounds.

Bram Stoker’s Dracula – W – 9.00pm

Gary Oldman has the time of his life playing the ultimate version of the ultimate vampire, and the film is absolutely gorgeous at times, but some of the supporting cast (Winona Ryder, Keanu Reeves) are COMPLETELY out of place.

Thor – Film Four – 9.00pm

Leaning heavy into the Shakespeare aspect of the Asgard world, this is the second best of the Thor trilogy, more fun than the dour The Dark World, but before the series went full-tilt crazy for Ragnarok.

Armaggedon – Universal TV – 9.00pm

Bruce Willis and his oil-drill mates have to save the world from a killer astronaut. This is Michael Bay’s least favourite of his own movies.

Pushing Tin – TG4 – 9.20pm

John Cusack and Billy Bob Thornton are rival air traffic controllers who push each other to the brink of sanity in this very dark comedy. Also stars Angelina Jolie and Cate Blanchett.

Guardians Of The Galaxy – RTE Two – 9.25pm

Best to check these out before they pass them off to a new director.

Face/Off – Comedy Central – 10.00pm

Travolta as Cage. Cage as Travolta. Stuff explodes in slow-motion. Legitimately one of the greatest action movies ever made.

Die Hard – Channel 4 – 11.15pm

The greatest action movie ever made.

The World’s End – Film Four – 11.15pm

Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and a group of mates have their pub crawl interrupted by an alien invasion. The sci-fi closer to the Cornetto trilogy, following the horror Shaun Of The Dead and action Hot Fuzz.

The Hangover – TCM – 11.4pm

Bradley Cooper and mates get accidentally drugged while on a stags party in Las Vegas and have no memory of the night, and no idea where the groom is. A fantastic comedy/mystery mash-up.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
