03rd Dec 2021

A great underseen thriller is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

It comes from Irish filmmaker Neil Jordan.

Staying in this Friday night? Why not kick back on the sofa with one of these fine films?

Here’s what’s on the box this evening.

xXx: The Return of Xander Cage – E4 – 9pm

Vin Diesel returns to the xXx franchise with what’s probably the best of the series’ three movies.

Why Him? – Film4 – 9pm

In this comedy, a father (Bryan Cranston) tries to stop his daughter’s immature tech-millionaire boyfriend (James Franco) from asking her to marry him.

The A-Team – Comedy Central – 9pm

Bradley Cooper and Liam Neeson star in this underrated action-thriller based on the popular ’80s series.

Avengers: Infinity War – RTÉ2 – 9.30pm

A massive, pivotal entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Damsel – TG4 – 9.55pm

Mia Wasikowska and Robert Pattinson star in this black comedy Western.

Donnie Brasco – Dave – 10pm

Johnny Depp and Al Pacino lead the cast of this excellent crime thriller about an undercover FBI agent who infiltrates the mob.

Lapsis – Film4 – 11.15pm

In this recently released indie sci-fi, a delivery man struggling to support himself and his ailing younger brother takes a job in a strange new realm of the gig economy.

Greta – BBC One – 12.25am

In our pick for this evening, a young woman (Chloë Grace Moretz) befriends a lonely widow (Isabelle Huppert) who’s harboring a dark and deadly agenda toward her.

Directed by Ireland’s own Neil Jordan (Michael Collins) and partly shot in Dublin, Greta works as a very fun throwback to stylish ’80s and ’90s thrillers like Fatal Attraction and Single White Female.

On top of this, it’s also a great showcase for legendary French actress Isabelle Huppert, who manages to make her villain somehow funny, terrifying and human all at once.
