Here are the 5 best movies on the telly tonight

Rory Cashin

Some genuine modern classics to choose from tonight…

First of all, we imagine everyone is going to want to watch Who Is America?, the new Sacha Baron Cohen show that premieres tonight, the full details of which you can find here.

There’s also loads to choose from in the cinema this week, including the new releases Incredibles 2, Skyscraper and Marrowbone, all of which we review in the latest episode of The Big Reviewski, which you can check out below:

However, if you are sitting in and have Who Is America? set to record to watch another time, there are some great movies to pick from:

MONDAY 16 JULY

Legend – Film 4 – 9.00pm

Based on the true story of Reggie Kray (Tom Hardy) and his unhinged brother Ronnie (also Hardy) as two gangsters who pretty much ran the crime world in 1960s London. It is clear Hardy had a great time playing both of these very different characters, and everyone involved really does try to make this a British version of Goodfellas.

RoboCop – E4 – 9.00pm

Not the 1987 original, but the 2014 remake, which really isn’t as bad as you’d heard/remembered. It also has Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton and Sam Jackson all having a blast, which is reason enough to (re)watch it.

Event Horizon – SyFy – 9.00pm

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: JOE loves Event Horizon aka The Shining In Space.

The Shawshank Redemption – ITV4 – 10.00pm

Consistently voted The Greatest Movie Of All Time in public opinion polls, if you’ve never seen it, then you need to rectify that. And if you have seen it, then you’re probably already gearing up to rewatch Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman’s growing prison friendship and oh no we’re already crying…

The Fountain – TG4 – 10.30pm

Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz are the couple who find their love is so strong, it expands across different times and realities, but when Weisz is stricken ill and on the verge of death, Jackman will go to ends of the world(s) to save her. A truly mind-bending, eye-popping experience with one of the greatest soundtracks of all time.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
