Here are the 6 best movies on TV this evening

Rory Cashin

edge of tomorrow

This is one of the best sets of movies on TV we’ve seen in quite some time.

Seriously, an amazing action movie, a proper multi-Oscar winner and a true hidden gem.

And that is before you get to the “turn brain off, I just want some fun” via Liam Neeson kicking people in the face.

MONDAY 9 DECEMBER

Edge Of Tomorrow – Sky One – 9pm

One of the most painfully overlooked action movies of the decade (if not of all time), featuring Tom Cruise at his least likeable (this side of Magnolia) and Emily Blunt at her most kick-ass (this side of Mary Poppins), saving the world over and over again in this alien invasion-meets-Groundhog Day mash-up.

Taken – FilmFour – 9pm

The original and best. Someone has taken Liam Neeson’s daughter and as a man with a special set of skills, he isn’t about to just let that happen.

No Country For Old Men – TG4 – 9.30pm

The Coen Brothers direct this neo-western that sees Josh Brolin, Tommy Lee Jones and a terrifying Javier Bardem cross paths in a violent, darkly funny, but still pretty grim tale of the wrong case of money falling into the wrong hands.

American Honey – FilmFour – 10.50pm

A teenage girl (Sasha Lane) with nothing to lose joins a travelling magazine sales crew and gets caught up in a whirlwind of hard partying, law bending and young love as she criss-crosses the Midwest with a band of misfits, led by Shia LaBeouf. One of the best hidden gems of the last few years.

Maps To The Stars – BBC2 – 11.15pm

This was right around the time that the world copped on that Robert Pattinson could actually act, joining an all-star cast (Julianne Moore, John Cusack, Mia Wasikowska, Olivia Williams) about a family of celebrities, willing to do whatever it takes to get and stay famous.

Full Metal Jacket – ITV4 – 11.35pm

Stanley Kubrick’s iconic war movie, a true all-time classic.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
