Half a dozen genuinely great movies.
Quite the mix of actors we've got on tonight! Robin Williams, Tom Cruise, Chris Evans, Tom Hardy, and... eh... Casper Van Dien. Listen, they aren't all equally good, but each of the movies that they're in tonight are definitely worth your time.
You just have to decide which one (or more) you'll be spending your evening watching.
TUESDAY 9 OCTOBER
Mrs. Doubtfire - Film Four - 6.35pm
Robin Williams loves his kids so much that he drags up as an Old English Housemaid in order to spend more time with them. Quite how he managed to have a full-time job as a runner on a TV studio AND be the nanny for the entire film at the same time is... not clear. Best not ask these questions.
Captain America: The First Avenger - E4 - 8.00pm
The first (and least good) Captain America movie is actually better in hindsight, the old-school action-adventure vibe works better knowing how the character eventually plays out. Hugo Weaving is also having a ball as the evil Nazi-ish bad guy.
The Last Samurai - Sky One - 9.00pm
Tom Cruise helps to save the samurai in another Hollywood story of The White Man Saving Other Races. Despite that, it is still a well-acted, well-directed action drama, with some fantastically physical action scenes.
Westworld - TCM - 9.00pm
Yep, the hit TV show was actually a movie. The 1973 version is basically Jurassic Park with cowboys instead of dinosaurs (the fact that it was written by the same guy who created Jurassic Park can't be a coincidence), and has no problem playing up the horror aspects of the scenario.
Starship Troopers - Syfy - 10.00pm
"Would you like to know more??"
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy - ITV4 - 11.00pm
Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Benedict Cumberbatch, Colin Firth, Mark Strong, John Hurt, Ciaran Hinds, Toby Jones, Kathy Burke, and Stephen Graham fill out this HUGELY impressive cast, all telling an insanely tense, but incredibly passively paced, spy thriller.
