Here are the 7 best movies on the telly tonight

Very mixed bag on tonight, but there are some genuine gems in there.

Tuesday, Tuesday, Tuesday… last week was ages ago, next week is SOOOO far away.

What to do? Watch a movie, duh!

You could go to the cinema and check out one of the FIVE new releases this week (we’ve reviewed them all right here), or you could sit in and enjoy one of these crackers:

TUESDAY 16 OCTOBER

Home Alone – E4 – 8.00pm

Yep, one of the best Christmas movies of all time is showing before Halloween. This is the TV equivalent of putting the Christmas decorations up mid-October. Having said that, it is still a great movie and we still love it a lot.

Shooter – Film Four – 9.00pm

Mark Wahlberg is a world-class sniper who is hired to help protect the President from an assassination attempt. But guess what? When an assassination attempt is made, he is framed for being the one behind it. Zero points for originality, but loads of points for just being a lot of fun.

Jack Reacher – Sky One – 9.00pm

Tom Cruise is a man with a particular set of skills, brought in by the government to help figure out the meaning behind a seemingly random act of violence. The opening shooting scene in the park is a masterclass in tension, with the rest of the movie having some particular highlights too, including a fight in a bathroom that is too small to fight in, and Werner Herzog as a full-on weirdo bad guy.

Face/Off – Comedy Central – 9.00pm

We’re not quite sure why one of the best action movies of all time is on Comedy Central, but we’re not going to question it. Nic Cage. John Travolta. Explosions. What more do you need?

Dirty Grandpa – RTE One – 9.00pm

Cards of the table: this is a TERRIBLE movie. But it should be witnessed as potentially the exact point that Robert De Niro gave up on his entire career. You could argue that maybe it was Righteous Kill, or Hide And Seek, but this might have been the final nail in the coffin. It is quite the thing to see, kind of like Al Pacino in Jack & Jill.

The Ghost – ITV4 – 10.30pm

Ewan McGregor is hired to finish the autobiography of Britain’s former Prime Minister (played fantastically well by Pierce Brosnan), thinking it will be a career-maker and a tasty paycheque. Things take a turn when he finds out some seriously shady details about his new project. Spoiler: there are zero ghosts in this movie.

Executive Decision – TCM – 10.55pm

“We’re not gonna make it!” “You are!” This back and forth between Kurt Russell and Steven Seagal is still one of the most underrated moments in action cinema. The rest of the movie is pretty good too.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
