Here are the 8 best movies on TV today

Rory Cashin

the girl on the train

The perfect buffer between the weekend and going back to work tomorrow morning…

There is a very decent mix of movies on tonight, so you’ll definitely find something here to enjoy!

That is assuming you’re not going to the cinema, in which case we’d recommend one of these instead.

But if you are insisting on sitting in, then you could do a lot worse than these:

SUNDAY 12 MAY

Volcano – FilmFour – 6.55pm

Tommy Lee Jones and Anne Heche (remember her?) try to save all of Los Angeles from an active volcano that suddenly pops up under the city and starts spewing lava all over the place. A bonkers but very enjoyable disaster movie.

Blades Of Glory – Comedy Central – 7.05pm

Will Ferrell and that guy from Napoleon Dynamite are arch-rival figure skaters who are forced to become a figure-skating pair in order to remain in the Olympic sport that they love so much. Weird and mostly wonderful comedy.

Skyfall – ITV2 – 8.00pm

Daniel Craig’s best outing as Bond (its either this or Casino Royale), and definitely his most stylish, sees him going up again Javier Bardem’s international terrorist.

The Girl On The Train – Channel 4 – 9.00pm

Emily Blunt plays an alcoholic who believes she witnessed a crime, but winds up becoming the primary suspect herself once she tells the police what she saw. A twisty turny psychological thriller, co-starring Rebecca Ferguson, Luke Evans, Justin Theroux, Lisa Kudrow, Allison Janney, and Edgar Ramirez.

True Lies – FilmFour – 9.00pm

Arnie is the secret spy, Jamie Lee Curtis is the wife who doesn’t know about his true job, but reality comes crashing down in James Cameron’s very good action comedy when a terrorist brings the fight to Arnie’s private life.

Dead Calm – TCM – 11.10pm

Nicole Kidman and Sam Neill are the couple on a sailing vacation attempting to get over a personal loss, when they discover Billy Zane in the middle of the ocean on a sinking ship. They save his life, but they’ll soon wish they hadn’t, because he is NOT a nice man…

Deepwater Horizon – FilmFour – 11.45pm

An all-star cast – Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell, John Malkovich, Kate Hudson, Gina Rodriguez, Dylan O’Brien – feature in this true life story of an oil rig that explodes, trapping everyone still on board, with no visible means of escape.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot – Channel 4 – 12.10am

Tina Fey plays the uptight US journalist who volunteers for a new gig in the middle of Afghanistan, but soon realises she may be out of her depth. Co-stars Margot Robbie, Martin Freeman, Alfred Molina, and Billy Bob Thornton.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
