Here are the 9 best movies on the telly today

Rory Cashin

mockingjay

Everything from classic Jim Carrey to one of the scariest thrillers of all time.

The first Saturday since we all got back to work. Chances are you’re trying to be good, trying for Dry January, trying to save money, etc.

If you fall under any of those categories, then we recommend you sit in and check out on of these.

SATURDAY 5 JANUARY

Star Trek: First Contact – Syfy – 4.30pm

Arguably the best of the Star Trek movies, and definitely the best one that Captain Picard was a part of, it finds the Enterprise crew going back in time to stop the Borg from taking over a less-developed Earth, while Data gets freaky with the Borg Queen.

Catch Me If You Can – BBC Two – 5.15pm

Spielberg goes full con-caper, having a blast with Leo DiCaprio playing a teenager who is so good at fraud and deception that he ends up being chased by the FBI (fronted by Tom Hanks) all over America.

Liar Liar – ITV2 – 6.15pm

Peak Jim Carrey, which means you either love this, or absolutely hate it. There is no middle ground with Peak Carrey.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part One – FilmFour – 6.40pm

While it never quite reaches the same highs as Catching Fire, the first part of the finale still brings the goods, as Katniss and co. are exposed to the media manipulation and PTSD brought about by attemtping to win the war against the capital.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part Two – FilmFour – 9.00pm

The more action-packed section of the two-parter, it should definitely be commended for not pulling any punches and giving viewers an easy, happy ending. We have a feeling this series will just continue to be more and more appreciated as time goes on.

Nightcrawler – RTE Two – 9.15pm

Jake Gyllenhaal should’ve almost definitely won an Oscar for his role in this movie about a creepy ambulance chaser who finds himself in high demand by news companies, mainly due to a complete lack of moral compass.

True Lies – Channel 4 – 10.35pm

One of Arnie’s best and most underrated movies, it is one part James Bond, one part rom-com, with Jamie Lee Curtis on killer form as his unquestioning wife who suddenly discovers her husband is one of the world’s most lethal secret agents.

Se7en – RTE Two – 11.30pm

We recently ranked this the best of David Fincher’s movies. Yes, even above Fight Club and The Social Network. Find out why here.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army – ITV2 – 12.40am

Before the new Hellboy reboot arrives in cinemas this April (check out the trailer for that one here), it is definitely worth watching Guillermo Del Toro’s brilliantly original sequel, featuring the perfect casting choice of Ron Perlman as the big red guy.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
